Once the scammers establish trust, they frequently threaten foreclosure and offer fraudulent “mortgage relief” options. Victims are then instructed to send payments through unusual channels, such as mailing money orders to third-party “attorneys” or representatives, or uploading funds to a Walmart Green Dot Money Card account. These payment methods are difficult to trace, making it challenging for victims to recover their losses.
The scale of this mortgage scam is alarming. In 2023 alone, the FCC received over 800,000 reports of imposter scams, resulting in an estimated $2.7 billion in losses.
